Embracing Winter at Monty’s Leap: Rain, Oak, and Sticky Date Pudding
Winter has truly arrived in the Great Southern, and here at Monty’s Leap, we’re embracing every windswept, rain-soaked moment of it. July has brought us chilly days, full dams, cosy tastings by the fire—and a renewed appreciation for the quiet beauty of the vineyard during dormancy.
Winter Weather and Vineyard Health
With over 100mm of rain already this season, nature is clearly announcing that winter is in full swing. For the first time in three years, we’re seeing a proper winter set in—essential for both our soil and our vines.
The vineyard soil is receiving a thorough flush of accumulated salts, thanks to consistent rain and low temperatures. Our proximity to the Kalgan River makes this especially important, as the rising freshwater rejuvenates the root zone, promoting long-term vine health.
While it’s certainly cold and windy, this time of year brings a unique sense of calm. We love it—and it’s one of the reasons we call this part of the world home.
From the Winery: The Role of Oak in Winemaking
Brenden, our winemaker, shared this month’s update on the importance of oak in wine maturation.
Oak barrels were once used solely for storage and transport, but today they are an essential tool in shaping the character of fine wine. As small amounts of water evaporate through the wood (known as la part des anges, or the angel’s share), the wine becomes more concentrated. Gentle oxygen exchange through the oak softens and integrates flavours, adding depth and complexity.
Did You Know?
The oak species used for barrels is Quercus Robur, known for its unique cross-linked grain that resists liquid penetration. Early South Coast settlers hoped our local Sheoaks might behave similarly—but they didn’t. While other native timbers like Jarrah are still used in winemaking vessels, they must be wax-lined to hold wine effectively.
Seasonal Highlight: Sticky Date Pudding
You can now enjoy a much-loved family recipe at the Monty’s Leap restaurant—Phil’s mum, Janice, has been making this sticky date pudding for decades, and it’s become a winter staple here.
Served warm with vanilla ice cream and rich caramel sauce, it’s comfort food at its best. Come in and enjoy it by the fire—it’s a treat that’s quickly becoming a guest favourite.
August Short Closure – Plan Ahead!
To allow for staff rest and maintenance, the Monty’s Leap restaurant will be closed from 22 August to 5 September.
The Cellar Door remains open during the first week of this period (22–25 August), so you’re still welcome to stop by for a tasting or to stock up on your favourite bottles.
